Discovery of Area Codes

Area codes were discovered in the 1940s by AT&T and Bell Laboratories, which became the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) in the United States and Canada in 1947.

In 1947, the North American area code system was established, dividing the continent into 86 numbering plan zones. In 1951, the concept was put into action. The state of New Jersey was the first to receive a telephone area code, which was 201. The goal was to make long-distance phone calls easier to dial directly. By the mid-1960s, the area code system, which had been adopted in bigger cities in the 1940s, had been fully deployed throughout the country.

A telephone numbering plan is a kind of a numbering system or a scheme used in a telecommunication company to allocate the phone numbers to telephony endpoints and subscriber phones if any. Telephone numbers are the addresses of telephone network participants that can be reached using a destination code routing system. Each administrative region of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and private telephone networks have its telephone numbering plan.

Geographic location often plays a factor in the sequence of numbers issued to each telephone user in public numbering systems. Many numbering plan administrators divide their service territory into geographic zones identified by a prefix, also known as an area code or city code, which is a group of numbers that form the most important portion of the dialling sequence to contact a telephone subscriber.

Before October 20, 2021, telephone numbers with central office code 988 were assigned to area code 505. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline authorised 988 as a calling code nationwide in 2020, causing a conflict for exchanges that allow seven-digit dialling. As a result, on October 24, 2021, this area code will be converted to ten-digit dialling.

A subscriber number is a unique identifier for a line that connects to client equipment. The first few digits of the subscriber number can be used to indicate the smaller geographical areas.

They may indicate the network provider in mobile networks. When dialling inside the same region or nation, callers in that area or country may not need to supply the specific area prefixes. Devices that automatically dial phone numbers may provide the whole number, including area and access codes.

The continental United States began with around 78 numbering plan areas in 1947 and quickly expanded in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Overlay area codes were created to provide more phone numbers in regions where there was higher demand. There are also plans to add more area codes to provide relief to places with exhaust dates within the next four years.

Conclusion:

Therefore, in conclusion, an area code identifies a phone number’s geographic location in the United States. Currently, there are 320 area codes in the United States of America including overlays (NANP). The state of California has the most area codes (35), followed by Texas (27) and New York (19).
